Lisa is from Grand Junction, Colorado and moved to California to attend Long Beach State where she received her Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice and a Master’s Degree in Criminology from Chapman. Lisa began her career as a Reserve Deputy for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Dept. until 1993 when she was hired by the El Segundo Police Department. Lisa came to HBPD in 1995 and worked patrol, DARE, and was assigned to backgrounds in 1999.
Backgrounds for police department positions are extremely extensive. There is a 40 page personal history package to complete. Every second of your life must be divulged and explained! There is a polygraph examination, a medical examination and possibly a psychological examination. Plus we talk to your friends, family, co-workers and neighbors. No stone is left unturned when applying to work for the police department. We will receive hundreds of applications for one position and most of the time Lisa will have to put 3-5 people in background just to get one candidate to pass all background levels. In 2016 Lisa hired 44 people. This means more than 150 people were put into the background process. Lisa cannot complete these backgrounds without the help of many people, but Lisa monitors the process of backgrounds, hiring paperwork, keeps command staff apprised of progress, while conducting background investigations herself. For all of her hard work and more we congratulate Lisa on receiving the Mayor’s Award!
