Library FactsThe Oak View Branch Library was established in June 3,1995 as part of a collective effort to bring books and services closer to the predominately Latinx and low-income Oak View neighborhood of Huntington Beach. Built in a portable unit in the parking lot of the Oak View Elementary School, the Oak View Branch Library began with a modest collection of 5,000 books and a space of approximately 1,880 square feet. Shortly thereafter, services such as computers, children’s storytimes, and the Homework Club were added, and along with Literacy classes, have become staple resources to families in the Oak View community.

In response to the success and high-demand for books following its opening, the Oak View Branch Library launched the Reading for Success campaign, and in just one year, doubled its collection and added new computers for the Oak View community. In 1997, the City secured a grant to add another portable unit, expanding the library’s size with an additional 1,960 square feet bringing much needed space for the library’s ever-growing users, literacy program, homework help, and story times.

Since its opening and subsequent expansion, the Oak View Branch has steadily extended its hours of service, and is currently open for the community Mondays through Thursdays 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Oakview Branch Library’s collection has tripled in size, numbering at over 13,000 items, with 10 percent of the collection in Spanish. In addition to books, collection items include DVDs, magazines, and hotspots.

Volunteer OpportunitiesOak View is a low-income Latino community, just blocks from the Central Library. Half the parents in Oak View cannot read or write well in their native language. Fewer than 10 % know how to read in English. They would like to help their children learn to read and succeed, but many of them don't know how. Here's what you can do…
