Fire Explorer Program

Program Information

The Huntington Beach Fire Department Fire Explorer Program is a youth-based program that focuses on an introduction to the fire service and emergency medical services. This program puts an emphasis on education, training, career development, and positive mentoring. HBFD Explorers also gain leadership, character development, teamwork and life skills.

The Program is an official department function under the direction of the Fire Chief. Although Explorers are not considered for direct recruitment into the HBFD, there is unparalleled insight into HBFD operations and valuable experience which may help with future career pursuit. Young men and women will have an inside look into the fire service to help them make the decision to take further steps towards a career as a firefighter or paramedic.

Training

HBFD Fire Explorers attend mandatory training meetings that include classroom education and hands-on manipulative training. Fire Explorers are encouraged to participate in the Ride-Along Program where they are given the opportunity to be assigned to on-duty crews and respond with them as an observer on emergency calls.

Additionally, the Huntington Beach Fire Department Fire Explorer Program offers controlled, classroom based and hands-on training on:

Hose lay and proper ladder techniques
Vehicle extrication tools and procedures
Search and rescue techniques
CPR certification
Ropes, knots, and repelling techniques
Firefighting in controlled fire settings
Marine safety information
And much more!

Program Requirements

The HBFD Fire Explorer Program is open to those who meet the following requirements:

Men and women aged 14-21 years
Completion of the 8th grade
20 years old or younger at the time of application
Grade point average of 2.0 at time of application and while in the program
Adherence to HBFD grooming standards
Successful completion of the application screening process and background check
Sucessful completion of the three-month probationary period and oral interview
