Plein Air "Paint-Out" Competition at 5th & PCH in HB
-Huntington Beach Art Center calls on experienced artists to capture Surf City USA on canvas-
Huntington Beach Art Center announces their Plein Air "Paint-Out" art competition to be held Saturday, June 1, 2019, at 5th & PCH outdoor marketplace located in downtown Huntington Beach.
"We are thrilled to bring over 25 accomplished artists to compete for our distinguished judges' awards for their creative expressions of this vital and beautiful part of our city along the California Coast" states HB Art Center, Director, Kate Hoffman. "5th & PCH is an ideal venue," adds Hoffman "to inspire artists to capture nature at her best, including spectacular ocean views, sunny skies and all the people gathered there to enjoy the day!"
"5th & PCH was designed as a 'work of art' to identify with the iconic HB pier and convergence of ocean and surrounding communities within it" states marketing consultant Patricia Rogers. 5th & PCH is home to unique sculptures, murals and hardscaped walkways named "Waterline" by their world-renown creators, (husband and wife team) Jud Fine and Barbara McCarren. "5th Street is actually designed in the shape of the pier, and the 2nd level buildings are joined by precise replicas of the pier, including the pilings that support it" adds Ms. Rogers.
Plein air painting is about leaving the four walls of the studio behind and experiencing painting and drawing in the open air. The practice goes back for centuries but was truly made into an art form by the French Impressionists. "Plein air painting is not for the 'faint-of-heart' explains Ms. Hoffman "as you are dealing with so many elements of being outdoors – like the sunlight that is continually changing, combined with so many moving objects – like people walking or playing nearby - who may actually become one of the subjects in the painting!"
The "Paint-Out" competition is open to Southern California artists, aged 18 and above, who must submit artwork for a jurying process before being accepted into the June 1st competition. Entries can include watercolor, oil, acrylic, gouache and other traditional painting mediums. There will be three (3) judges who will decide the winners of first, second and honorable mention. Each of the judge are experienced artists in their own right, with strong ties to Huntington Beach, including HB Mayor ProTem, Lyn Semeta, along with HB Pier Plaza Art Affair founder/director, Pam Free, and owner of Timeless Treasures Boutiques, Dawn McCormack.
The winning artists will receive cash prize awards, sponsored by Ms. June Dugmore, who has served the art community on many levels, including Golden West College Art Gallery and HB Art Center. "I have always loved the arts", exclaims June "and have trained in fine art since I was a little girl! I am so proud to partner with the HB Art Center on this exceptional event that invites the public to get up-close to see the process of painting in the most challenging, and yet inspirational environments!"
The Plein Air "Paint Out" is open to the public and free to attend at 5th & PCH (155 5th Street, Huntington Beach 92648). The event will be held Saturday, June 1, beginning at 10:00 am. Judging begins at 3:00, and awards presented at 3:30 pm. For more information, call (714) 374-1650, or visit www.huntingtonbeachartcenter.org.
